Parish Council

Gamlingay Parish Council

The Village College had advised that it would allow the Parish Council to leave the trees that had been planted at the bottom of the school field and was willing for hedging to be planted along the boundary with the Recreation Ground but would not agree to further planting at the front of the school. Wimpey Homes had been asked for an additional £616.55 in interest on the late payment of interest relating to the transfer of the Public Open Space at the Chapel Fields estate. The Tenant Liaison Officer had agreed to commence consultations about the possible construction of a parking lay-by at Murfitt Way.

The County Council had advised that the number of street lights in Stocks Lane did not meet current specifications but were adequate. The cost of moving the existing lights in order to accommodate more would be prohibitive but the replacement of top mounted lanterns with right angled brackets may be undertaken.

The Council had been advised that one forty foot light adjacent to the Butts would be ineffective in lighting the play area. It was suggested that a light in each corner of the play area would be more appropriate but it was agreed that no action would be taken as the cost would be approximately £1,500 for each light. The possibility of double headed brackets being installed would be investigated.

The Parish Council representative had attended further meetings of the Safer Routes to School initiative and it was noted that the pathway between Cinques Road was to be resurfaced and dog bins installed at each end of the path. It was possible that street lighting would also be installed on the pathway which would be formally named. Following correspondence with the Warden and residents of Blythe Way, it was agreed that no action would be taken to ask for the access to the Day Centre to be widened.

The County Council had been asked to erect an additional sign near the Iron Church crossroads showing ‘Gamlingay Heath’ and for the existing sign to be relocated to the edge of the village. The Headteacher and Chairman of Governors of the Village College joined the meeting to discuss the future of the Youth Mobile Building. The Parish Council had accepted responsibility for the building in 1995 at the request of the Community Education Tutor and the Governors of the College as it was no longer used as a classroom and would offer a good venue for youth activities. The Headteacher was concerned about damage to the school site and access to the toilet facilities and had asked for the unit to be removed. Access to the unit was now difficult as the gates in the new tennis court fencing were locked. It was noted that the toilets in the College had been used for the past five years. Councillors felt that it was extremely important that the venue was retained for the young people in the Community. Following the meeting, the Parish Council agreed that the Mobile Unit should remain where it was for the time being but agreed to actively seek an alternative venue. The possibility of the Community Centre being extended to include a self contained extension will be investigated.

The Parish Council expressed its disappointment that, having given the Village College £10,000 towards the provision of a fitness centre and all weather courts, its representatives were not willing to work with the Parish Council to retain the Youth Mobile Unit.

Station Road is to be kerbed, haunched and resurfaced.

A letter from Green Acres Residents Association complained about the state of the footpaths, grass cutting and the maintenance of the stream adjacent to some of the properties. Quotations have been invited for the repair of the edge of the tennis courts which had been damaged by root growth and new fencing.

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on 24th April when it is hoped that people on the Electoral Roll will attend in order to tell Councillors about their priorities for the village.

The application for a mobile telephone tower on the BT building in the centre of the village has now been withdrawn. That does not mean it will not be resubmitted so watch this space!
