GOLDEN JUBILEE GARDEN Our own Ground Force team

by Hailey Grist (Chairman) and Louise Hickson (Secretary),
Barclays Employee Volunteering Group

The Sunshine Pre-School in Gamlingay is having a garden makeover.
A number of employees from Barclays Bank formed a group and applied for a grant under their employee volunteering scheme and Barclays Bank have donated œ1000 towards the project.
Gazette LogoA big thank you to Barclays Bank for giving us the opportunity to approach this project and enabling us to develop our skills outside the workplace. Even though the task was at times far more difficult than anticipated it has given us all a great sense of delight at what we have achieved.
Work started the weekend of 16/l7th February aided by a group of fathers of preschool children. The following tasks have been completed:
A new sandpit has been constructed, a new patio laid, a tree has been chopped down and garden rubbish cleared. There is a lot of new brightly coloured trellis and the garden looks not only far tidier but much bigger than before.
Although work is still in progress it is hoped the project will be completed in time for the children's return to Pre-school after the Easter Holidays.
The following people have been invaluable to the project: Simon Jarvis of L F Jarvis and Son (Incorporating Robin Harris Joinery) has been the Hero of the project. He donated a brand new timber framed sandpit with wooden decking around, complete with the sand. He has been advising and overseeing the project to ensure all work carried out is to a safe standard. Thank you Simon for all your hard work and for putting up with us untrained D I Y Idiots~
A special thank you to the Jarvis family for their continued support and their kind donation, as well as;
Derek Izzard from Cambridge and Bedford Skip Hire who donated a skip free of charge for the weekend which we managed to fill to the brim. Sorry Derek!
Further donations were from Robert Dyas who gave us a lovely wooden bench. Cuprinol who donated an assortment of brightly coloured wood stains for the trellis panels and Greensands Plant Centre for supplying these at cost price.
We would like to thank the W I committee for allowing us free run of the garden and for bearing with us.
We would have not been able to do the project without our helpers ~ thank you to Nikki Matthews and her husband Darren, Sue Wright and Stuart her son, Claire Chinnery, Sally Graves, Garry Hines, Katie Tanner (all from Barclays) and helpers Elaine Dellar and her husband Nigel, Clive Pattle, Martin Waker, Paul Warner and David Hickson.
We are hoping to hold an open day at the Preschool and an official Garden Opening Ceremony when the project is complete. Details to be advised nearer completion of the project
Thank you once again to everyone involved. As I know at times it has been very hard work but we are nearly there
