Dear Friends,

The Apostles Creed begins with the words, ‘I believe in God.’ It rather reminds me of the opening words of the book of Genesis, ‘In the beginning God’. Both start with God, like an artist who begins her/his painting with the sky.

The Bible takes it for granted that there is a God, who is active and who cares for His creation. The Apostles Creed is a statement of faith. A belief that there’s a God who existed before all things, who doesn’t need anyone to support him, who (unlike the idols) does not need to be carried by people but who carries us. It also reminds me of certain words in the letter to those who were Hebrew Christians, ‘And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.’

So, is there evidence that God exists? I believe there is. There is evidence in the creation around us, evidence in those who have put there trust in him, evidence in answered and even unanswered prayers (for God does know what is best for us). There is evidence in the life and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. God has not left us without witness about himself. His footprints are seen in creation – if only we will look. Of course there are consequences of believing in God. It means that we are accountable as to how we live our lives here on earth. How we treat our fellow human beings. So it’s probably quite comfortable not to believe in him, to try and put the thought out of our minds.

For me it makes more sense that there is a Creator, than believe that the world in which we live came about by some random process. It also gives me a real hope and purpose for living!

God bless you,

Tom Elsby
