URGENTLY SOUGHT: NEW CO-ORDINATOR FOR THE GAMLINGAY ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Poppy

An organiser is urgently needed for the 2001 Poppy Day, and beyond. Help and advice will willingly be given. Please contact G Dickerson on 01767 650 900 The alternative - no Poppy Day in our village

A daisy is a flower,
A swallow is a bird.
Is a human just a human,
And a word just a word?
A daisy is pretty,
A swallow is small.
Can you classify a human?
Understand their words at all?
You can see a daisy's colours,
You can hear a swallow's song.
A human isn't simple,
And words can last too long.

GAMLINGAY BOWLS CLUB

by Derek Paul (Hon. Secretary)

The 2001 season has started, and began with a win against Great Barford in our first game. However, the club is short of members and we should like to attract more people to come along and join us. We are having a Beginners day at the Bowls Green in Stocks Lane on Sunday 3rd June at 3.00pm.

Everyone will be made most welcome, you need no experience, just enthusiasm, we will teach you how to play.

If you are interested come along on the 3rd. Please wear flat soled shoes. The club will provide bowls for your use.

For further information on the Bowls club, please contact Derek Paul, Honorary Secretary on 650 225.

GAMLINGAY TOY LIBRARY VIDEO APPEAL

The Toy Library, which is held in conjunction with the Mothers and Children's Group, is making an appeal for donations of unwanted children's videos.

We have a good selection, but some of them are getting a bit old now so any new titles in good condition would be most appreciated. If you have any to donate you can either bring them along to our session which is held in the Community Centre on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 9.30 until 11.00am, or leave them with Bridget at 39, Church Street.

The Toy Library welcomes new members aged from birth until early school years. We are constantly adding new toys to our collection and specialize in educational toys for children with special needs. Membership is £2.50 per year and the rental for toys is 50p per fortnight.

LETTER

Dear Sir,
The steps to the big slide in The Butts play area are again in need of repair. Can I ask, that when these steps are reworked the council takes into account the needs of grandparents with less robust legs than their small charges.

If the depth of the present steps is intended to deter very small children from using the big slide: I assure you it doesn’t work! If of course, it is intended to deter grandparents from using the slide, it is only moderately successful.

On a more serious note; I would suggest that the depth of the steps, and the difficulty small children have in mounting them, is likely to be a cause of accidents.

R J Hough (visiting grandfather)
P.S. The stinging nettles either side of the steps could do with some attention as well.

This letter has been copied to the parish council for their attention - ed.

Tennis

We have had a good start to the season, despite the weather. Our opening event of the year took place on Sunday 29th April when people were invited to participate in an informal knock about and to partake in one of Tony Groom’s famous BBQ's. It was great to see so many old and new faces. The coaching has now got underway, we are offering coaching for short tennis, junior and senior. We still have places available for all sessions on a Tuesday evening. For more information please contact Bridget. It's never too late to join in.

Other events that we have planned throughout the year include

  • Junior Tournament on 10 June
  • Senior Tournament on 29th June at 18:30 Bring a racket to throw in the pot! and visit the Cock afterwards.
  • Strawberries and Cream on 15th July

For more information please contact Bridget on 650510.
