NEWSLETTER 1999We have had a terrific year with a dramatic increase in our membership. To date we have just short of 200 members, 123 of whom are juniors. Our coaching program, which ran throughout the summer term, was very well attended and we were again fortunate to have the coaching skills of Bob Brookes from the Sandy School of Tennis. We ran sessions for juniors and seniors as well as short tennis for the under 10's which is always extremely popular. We have had a new group of boys representing us in the under 14's junior league this summer. They have shown great enthusiasm and, considering their inexperience, have performed very successfully. The under 16's continued their success of last year by winning every match they played in. We wish to pass on our thanks to Kay Palmer, Liz Tipping and Tina Wooding for all their hard work in organising the boys’ teams and supervising their matches. Our men's team have also had a very successful season coming joint top of their league; the mixed team have come round about the middle of theirs. Thank you to the team captains for all their efforts and well done to all the players. The End of Season Barbecue was good fun as usual. We played a doubles tournament with the juniors being paired with the seniors. The winners were Chris Dennis and Sophie Day with runners up, Philip Hough and Philip Tipping. We have been having some interesting discussions of late with the Village College regarding their newly refurbished tennis courts which are currently open to the public. They have agreed to offer members of GTC a discount when booking their courts. This can be done through the fitness centre upon presentation of a valid GTC membership card. You will be aware that we have not, to date, issued membership cards but are prepared to do so this season for anyone wanting to use the College courts. Please contact Bridget (650510) and she will arrange this. As from next season, all members will receive membership cards in place of the current shoe tags. The Village College are lucky enough to have flood lights on one of their courts and we have decided to reserve this court during the winter months for our members' use. This will be available on a Monday night from 7pm until 9pm. We shall have to charge our members to use this facility but hope that £2 for seniors and £1 for juniors will be acceptable. Just turn up on the night if you wish to play. We hope to be able to continue using the Village College's courts during the summer as an extension of our own courts. We may be able to play our league matches on them as it would be helpful to have the changing room facilities, or indeed we could hold our coaching sessions there in order to free up our courts for other members. These matters are open to discussion and your opinions would be useful. We should also like to hear from you regarding any ways in which you think things could be improved on our courts - perhaps more seating or a shelter? Anyone who is interested in joining the club this year or next, or in volunteering to serve on the committee should contact Bridget Smith. The courts will be available throughout the winter months and the new season will begin in April. Thank you all for making GTC one of the best supported clubs in the village.
